Based in Budapest, this course will examine first-hand the education, history, and culture of Hungary. Students will compare and contrast schools in Hungary and the US with a special focus on social class and poverty.
About half of the time will be observations in a variety of schools. The other half will be service learning in English classes of a local school serving disadvantaged youth--primarily of Roma heritage. Discussion and reflection will complement the observations and service.
In addition, significant cultural events including in-country travel, art exhibits, concerts, religious events, family visits, and exploration of holocaust sites will be included.
