In the bottom of the Aegean Sea a shipwreck was discovered dating to the Late Bronze Age. The goods it carried were so varied that it is impossible to identify the origins of the ship. Its cargo was truly international. In the 1300 BCE, trade was a result of diplomacy and diplomacy was regulated by religion. Humans believed that all duties were duties to the gods and all events had deity as their cause. In this class, we will examine how the religions of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Syria-Palestine and Greece shaped the ancient Mediterranean world.
