In this course we will explore various abstract theories of democracy and engage with the practice of American democracy firsthand and at its highest level. We will analyze classic texts in political philosophy and contemporary texts in political theory in order to ask and attempt to answer such questions as: Which good or goods is democracy meant to promote? How can it best promote them? What challenges does democracy face? How can it best overcome them? We will also observe key democratic processes and interact with key democratic players in Washington D.C. in order to determine which and how well these abstract democratic theories are realized in our concrete practices.
