China: Creating a Path
to a Sustainable Community

This program will focus on the challenge of creating thriving, equitable, and ecologically healthy societies. How we can work towards the goal of enabling all people to thrive while also preserving the health and integrity of the Earth? How can we ensure that economic development does not lead to ecological degradation and social injustice? Students in the program will grapple with the various aspects of these pressing, practical, and real-world questions. Students will explore the roles played by science, the arts, social groups, and political actors in fostering movement towards the creation of a sustainable community. By engaging with people in China and learning a bit of Chinese language, students will have the opportunity to be immersed in a deep exploration of how people in different societies can work to create a desirable future – and to come to a better understanding of what that desirable future might look like.
